Secret of the Templars
What is Elixir of Templars?
Secret of the Templars, the Modern Elixir of Jerusalem
Is there anybody who has never heard about the Knights Templar and their secret?
What is the Templars’ secret? In addition to all the treasure the greatest secret was that of the unbelievably life-spans lived in health, strength and mental freshness which seemed to the medieval man, magic, something of a miracle.
In fact it was actually a miracle in the epidemic-ridden Middle Ages when there were no medicines, vaccines or even hygiene to speak of: countless sources of the day include references to mystical characteristics in the diet of the Knights Templar which enabled the members of the order to live nearly three times as long as their average contemporary.
A number of famous members of the brotherhood lived very long lives, and there can be no question about each of them having been among the toughest warriors, including: Hugues de Payens, one of the founders of the Order, Geoffrey de Charney, Jacques De Molay grand master, the last grand master of the Order of the Knights Templar.
Each of them were very strong men, in a very good health, even in their 60s and 70s – they took part in many a battle and governed the diversified order in full mental freshness.
The Knights Templar are known for their habit of consuming small or medium amounts of palm wine mixed with Aloe pulp and lots of different special medicinal herbs, every day.
The Elixir of Jerusalem
This brew was known as Elixir of Jerusalem, which was found to accelerate recovery and prolong the lives of the Knights Templar, along with other beneficial effects. Centuries later it also came to be known as the Elixir Of Long Life but the Templars’s secret was the very ingredients of the drink.
The Aloe Vera contained in the templars’s drop, i.e. the Elixir, has remarkable disinfectant properties and can be used for treating inflammations and wounds. Its consumption in copious amounts might have helped the knights fending off certain infections. Jerusalem’s Elixir contained palm wine, a special hemp extract, Aloe Vera and lots of other secret ingredients. It was a beverage of anti-inflammatory, disinfectant, purifying effects, rich in vitamins and minerals. No wonder that it was considered as a panacea, for it its effects did seem to be miracles in those days. Its effects on the health of the Knights Templar were, indeed, miraculous in an age when cholera, plague, leprosy, typhoid and other fatal diseases rampaged unstoppably. They must have known something…
And today’s world is not without dangers either, as we have entered the age of modern pandemics.
The age of modern pandemics is an era in which humankind’s life and death struggle with pathogens is becoming more and more desperate. The battle with the coronavirus was only the first clash. Evolution teaches us that there can be no absolute winner in the host-parasite contest; one or the other can only gain the upper hand for a while.
A platform set up by the UN of the most brilliant scientists of 150 countries – the IPBES – has recently released a report emphasising that humankind has entered the age of pandemics…

The real secret of the Knights Templar
What did the Knights Templar eat and drink so that they lived so long?
Mystery and myth: The Elixir of Jerusalem is the Templars’ secret
The Knights Templar were an extremely effective military force, whose mission was to protect pilgrims on their way to hotly disputed Holy Land,
The weaponry, the horses and the financial institutions which the Knights Templar helped spread in Europe have been intensively studied but one of the most important aspects of their Order has remained largely unexplored – what did they eat, how did they lived, what kept them “forever young”; what was the Templars’ secret?
The myth of the super warrior
Lots of reliable sources of the day include references to mystical characteristics in the diet of the Knights Templar which enabled the members of the order to live nearly three times as long as their average contemporary.
What was the unbelievable Templar’s Secret?
Many have been searching for the secret simply in their diet.
But unfortunately, though it appears to be a great story, it is probably not true in itself.
It has been claimed that they eat meat only three times a week and that they drank in moderation. The problem with this presumed special diet is however, that it was not so special in the Middle Ages.
What did they actually eat and drink?
Being warrior monks, the Knights Templar lived on a correspondingly modest diet. They enjoyed eating fish when they were allowed to, along with legumes, vegetables, fruits, olives and lots of root vegetables, grains and bread. They ate practically what peasants ate in the Middle Ages, with a little more fish and a lot more meat, plus oriental foods when in the Holy Land.
There was one difference, however – their wine consumption. It has been found that the Knights Templar drank little or medium amounts of wine which they often diluted and mixed with aloe pulp and a long list of other ingredients.
This brew was known as Elixir of Jerusalem, which was thought to accelerate recovery from diseases and the healing of wounds, and fuelled the myth of the alleged longevity of the Knights Templar.
Did it work? Perhaps it did!
Aloe Vera has remarkable disinfectant properties as well and can be used for treating inflammations and wounds.
Way of life and long life
Although it would be fantastic to say that the “secret oriental brew” kept the Knights Templar in a good shape longer than their contemporaries but there was one more simple secret to their good health: hygiene and way of life.
It is well known that the Knights Templar always washed their hands before eating. Moreover, they frequently changed clothes because they spent a lot of time in the sweltering heat of the Middle East; this kept away dirt and disease. Moreover, the Knights who worked outdoors were exempted from certain regulations, including, primarily, rules on eating.
Some say that this knowledge came from Arab physicians, the best of their age, but at any rate it appears that they adopted the philosophy of “cleanliness next to God”; although it was not mentioned in the Bible, yet it seems to have been part of the lives of monks.
From today’s perspective it should also be taken into account that the Order of the Knights Templar and, in general, people in the Middle Ages lived a lot more active life than we do today. Hard work was an everyday reality for everybody, except for the nobility of the day; consequently, diseases we face today, such as cardiovascular diseases, were largely unknown back then. Likewise, the term “organic” did not exist because essentially everything was organic, grown locally, mostly by the consumers themselves.
Oaths taken by the Knights Templar also contributed to their good physical condition.
Diet
Although their diet may not have granted them supernaturally long lives, it must very probably have had certain benefits. Living on healthy cereals, fruits and vegetables, as well as adequate quantities of meat, dairy products and alcoholic beverages, coupled with ample physical activity, had excellent effects – we should all follow their good example.
Their diet, way of life and special beverage might have kept them in good health but could not save the Order.
